
ABOUT ME
Born and raised in Newark, Shakima K. Thomas brings a high level of compassion and commitment in all her endeavors. Having faced the struggles of growing up in Dayton Street projects and on South 16th Street, she fully understands what it means to be counted out and labeled a problematic statistic. Growing up, she attended Newark Public Schools. Balancing academic and athletic work, she graduated as a salutatorian from Passaic County Community College which earned her several scholarships including an academic scholarship from the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Through these scholarships, Shakima earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University in Newark. Subsequently, she attended the Keller Graduate School of Management and California State University in Los Angeles where she earned Master of Business Administration and Master of Arts degrees, respectively.
Her caring nature formed from the sum of her life experiences. Presently, she has contributed immensely to her community by working as a Teacher’s Assistant for beginners under HeadStart, a substitute teacher for Newark Public schools, and Family Service Worker for Essex County Division of Family Assistance and Benefits. Shakima lives her life at the service of others. Practicing empathy, she establishes rapport with people by understanding their unmet needs. Shakima’s cooperative way of problem-solving with people helps determine solutions to get needs met.
A wonderful mom and homeowner, Shakima enjoys investing her time and efforts in her city. She has done so over the years by participating in various voluntary services. A fierce advocate who is devoted to the service of her community, Shakima remains an embodiment of vitality to the people of Newark.
